It’s no secret that Nosara enjoys the closest proximity to the blue water in all of Costa Rica.

It may surprise you to learn that our specific stretch of ocean is so fertile and untouched that (when the money is on the line) million-dollar sportfishing teams make the trek from Los Suenos to try to score in our backyard.

So it turns out that this week is the Los Sueรฑos Signature Triple Crown and look what turned up:

In just this one picture there are 13 other boats:

Think that all this competition would mean tough times for the flagship Wanderer?

Think again!

The Hogan Family scored like they were the only boat on the water, boasting multiple Sailfish releases backed up by big Dorados.

Got to admit it’s pretty cool watching Captain William and First Mate Alex fish circles around these so-called pros…just cause you got a big boat and money to burn doesn’t mean your a master!

Becky Hogan is one tough-as-nails angler from Northeast Florida, and on her past trips with us she has scored big on Sailfish and Marlin.

This year she brought her whole family down for the adventure, including her two son’s whose military schedules required that this trip be planned far in advance.

Captain William set course for Sailfish City and immediately the Hogan family snagged the first of five pez velas.

Safe releases all around by First Mate Alex.

They topped off the trip with the biggest Ponpano we’ve ever seen:

Seriously, we usually don’t even include this species in our fishing report because of their relative abundance but this manhole-cover sized beast will make enough ceviche to feed a village!

Captain Carlos and his brother Mate Kevin are using the Explorer to make a statement to the rest of the fishing community: You don’t need a big boat to catch big fish!

Check out this pair of awesome Sailfish releases:

Great safe releases by Mate Kevin underscored the professional excellence of this fraternal fishing team. Great work by the Explorer!

Captain Scott Brownlee and his buddy Gene DiBetta took a whirlwind trip to Nosara where they fished three trips in three days…that’s Florida anglers for ya!

The Discoverer reports lots of great catches for this duo.

What’s even better is that these guys planned this trip four days before they arrived…when the fishing itch hits, you gotta scratch!

The Wanderer stayed close to shore on January 7 as client Randy Covey only had to travel 6 miles to score several Dorados and Sailfish.

Randy scored the first release at the beginning of the full day trip, breaking the ice for what would become a three Sailfish day.

This late day Dorado put the finishing touch on a great day on the water.

Jon Calderaro and his friends signed up for an afternoon half day with Captain William and they got a ton of fishing crammed into their 5 hour trip.

The ladies led off with a pair of nice Sailfish releases plus they snagged this little Bonita:

The boys answered the girls’ challenge with a Double Sailfish release:

Notice how the angler on the port side is still fighting his fish during the photo and release. Handling multiple fish and multiple fights simultaneously is what really separates First Mate Alex as a master of billfishing.

When you get such good action late in the day, it is tempting to squeeze all you can out of the daylight, and when you have a full moon rising you can push it even further.

The Discoverer has kept cooking with gas in the New Year with a fantastic run on Sailfish.

Captain David and Mate Juan Carlos have found their billfishing rhythm and are posting double-digit release numbers.

Also they have scored some excellent meat fish, from the usual Dorado to the rare-for-this-time-of-year Yellowfin Tuna:

Great work by the battleship!

Captain Carlos has continued to score big for his clients in 2015. He started the year off with this fantastic Double Sailfish Release:

Naturally, both fish were released but you can’t say the same for these beefy Dorados that have been filling our clients’ fishboxes:

Big Dorado have been a constant with several reports of full fishboxes of fresh filets.

Also, it is nice to White Tuna showing up on the scorecard again; these fellas have been a little scarce since the Dorado came close to shore. These 10-15lbs. White Tunas are the perfect size for tasty filets and sushi.

Of course the barroom brawler also picked a fight with some stunning Sailfish recently; check out the fight on this monster.

A safe release by Mate Kevin is the perfect send-off to this excellent fishing triumph.
