Marty Crotty is the most hardcore angler you ever want to meet. Who else has the guts to fish five straight days on the mighty Wanderer?
These guys got their week off to a fast start by accomplishing one of the most challenging and rewarding maneuvers in fishing: the Double Sailfish Release!
Good to see these guys get up close and personal with these billfish because I get the feeling they will be seeing a lot of each other this week.
The Explorer caught the biggest Amberjack we have ever seen on April 10 with client Bradford Kuhns and young Mr. Thomas Donnelly. This monster is estimated to weigh 90+ lbs. and is an incredible fishing accomplishment.
It is hard to know which was more difficult: catching this behemoth or hoisting it up for the picture!

John Hislop and hjs group are the next in line to represent North Carolina in our ongoing battle with bluewater billfish. These folks ain’t playing around either; have three trips planned this week and the first one brought a pair of wonderful Sailfish releases plus a decent Dorado for the dinner table.
This high-flying Sailfish hit the bait around 12:45 and before the clock struck 1 this bad boy was safely released. Very efficient fight coupled with excellent boat handling and a clean bill shot…all in a day’s work for the mighty Wanderer.
A half-hour later the Hislop party put this Dorado on ice. This is a great way to start your week in Nosara with filets ready to go.
The walk-off shot came just after 3pm when another mean Sailfish hit the hook.
This fight was intense and the fish was strong, but once again the Wanderer had a counter for every punch it could throw and achieved a clean release at 3:20pm
Let’s hope this is a sign of good things to come for these Tar Heel state anglers as they take two more trips to the blue water this week.
Scott Janni and his group scheduled a morning half day on the Wanderer and these Montana-based anglers got all they could handle! They released this mighty Pacific Sailfish at 10am after a vigorous 15 minute duel.
They followed up with another release at 11am.
This is the kind of action we have come to expect from the flagship: multiple billfish releases in less than 5 hours. Great job as always by the master Captain William and First Mate Alex.
Grant Singleton and Leon Sylvester left the kids and wives at home and went out hunting for billfish. Captain Carlos of Adventurer and Explorer fame joined Captain William on the flagship Wanderer and that means no escape for these Pacific Sailfish.
Careful with that iPad, buddy! They show them doing a lot of things with iPads in the commercials, but I don’t recall seeing this application before.
By the end of the trip the fellas had added three more releases to their scorecard, bring the total for both families to seven releases over a 48 hour span. Very good performance from these North Carolina anglers.
While Singleton and Sylvester ladies were over on the Wanderer, the fellas took to the barroom brawler Explorer and they also released a wonderful Pacific Sailfish:

FishingNosara has hosted some wonderful folks from the Carolinas and the group of Leon Sylvester, Grant Singleton, and their families has continued the tradition of great Costa Rican angling by folks from the Tar Heel State.
They have several trips scheduled this week and kicked things of right with three Sailfish releases on the first trip. The first one (above) came in early around 8:30am while Sailfish number two found the hook just before 10am.
The final fish of the trip put on a heck of a show on the way to the boat but the masterful Captain William was unfazed by the dance routine and simply kept the fight short and sweet.
Of course safe fish-handling by First Mate Alex meant that all of these beasts will be ready for battle again in the near future…maybe in time for Team Carolina’s next trip!
Our good friends Nora Nolan and Neil Jerome returned to the Wanderer in search of more bottom fishing accomplishments to add to their legend, and they did see some rod-bending action.
Looks like a boatload of fun as always for these SoCal clients.
We’ve had great reports from the inshore reefs all month, but this Broomtail Grouper may take the cake as the nicest reef-dweller of the month to find the icebox. This lunker was caught by client Steve and his wife and should keep this group fed for several dinners.
Estimated at 35lbs., this is the sweet spot when it comes to Grouper size and filet quality. Let’s just hope Steve has a big appetite!
The action in the Costa Rican rivers moves as quickly as the freshwater pours from the mountains into the sea. The Fuppernos (Friends of the Nosara River) report lots of excellent catches this month, but let’s start with a catch from the nearby town of Samarra.
This 34lbs. Snook was caught on March 4 by Luis Cordero 3/4oz duster. Great fish and it was certainly the talk of the town this month.
However our boys at the Rio Nosara weren’t slacking this month. Check out their best catches:
Our main man Alejandro got his fresh ceviche squared away (above) while our old buddy Cumi had two nice fishing days this month.
