Our rainy season fishing campaign concluded with a trio of trips in early October with angler Troy Davis enlisting the Explorer for blue water action.

Several Sailfish releases were backed up with a literal boat load of medium-sized Dorados.

Mr. Smith and his crew got out of town just in time to avoid some historic flooding. Some areas of Nosara endured 30 feet of flooding.

The flooding in Nosara has been challenging, but the Ticos are working together and helping each other out.

Here is the 23-foot Adventurer with Capitan Alex, Antonio, and NPR staff Jeni and others getting some local kids to high ground.

The waters have since receded and things are getting back to normal.

Most of the boats are on the hill for their annual refit and repaint to prepare for the new season. But Javier and Grevan felt the fishing itch, so they took the Transporter out to the reef and scored a boatload of Yellowfin Tunas in just under two hours.

That’s right, the Transporter…our 14-foot ferry boat that our clients know well from the trip from Playa Garza out to the boats.

Well, um….two things here: 1.) This is the boat record for the Transporter, and 2.) You know how we always say you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Nosara? This is what we are talking about.

Jeroen Nelis specifically wanted to target Sailfish, and although we can only take what the ocean gives us, on September 18 the ocean was in a giving mood and provided this angler with an excellent Sailfish release.

This great trophy release was backed up by some nice Dorados for the dinner table.

Great work by Captain Fico and the Explorer!

Excellent video arriving from our friends Paul Arthur and Ricky Kay. These guys brought their own camera crew along for their fishing adventure and the resulting video is awesome:

Great work by Captain Alex, Captain David (of the Adventurer) filling-in at the mate position, and of course these great Texas anglers.

The Discoverer is powering through the so-called rainy season with a great day of fishing with angler Ken Burns on September 6. The highlight of the day was this beautiful Blue Marlin.

They also scored a nice Double Sailfish release:

They added one more Sailfish near the end of the trip.

Amazing work by big battleship Discoverer!

Off Season Maintenance

This is the time of year when we perform maintenance on our houses, boats, and vehicles. The houses may be empty and the boats are on the hill, but as usual there is a flurry of activity around the Nosara Paradise Rentals campus.

Both of our offices have a fresh face for the new year with new varnish on the exterior wood and new paint.

Meanwhile we have heard your feedback on Casa Privada’s bunkhouse and are adding a full bathroom. No more coming into the main house late at night when nature calls.

We have big things planned for the boats this off-season as well. As usual, all boats are being sanded, cleaned and resprayed with fresh gelcoat. Here is the flagship Wanderer, all stripped down:

It’s a lot of work, but this is what is required to keep the fleet in tip-top shape.

This rare Costa Rica-sourced Guapinol (Hymenaea courbaril) wood will replace the existing transom on the Wanderer (above).

Also, the Harvester is getting some long-overdue attention. Remember that last year we left her in the water for the off-season, meaning that this is the first repaint since her initial campaign in January 2016.

The barroom brawler Explorer is also getting spruced up for the new year. Top of the list is rebuilding and re-painting the consoles…they will look great with the new windshields that are coming soon.

The Adventurer is always getting new tricks up her sleeve. Last year we installed a single live tuna tube (unheard of on such a small boat), and this year we are adding a bottom machine.

Here is the custom stand that Captain David has constructed to accept the bottom machine.

Even the Transporter is showing some wear and tear.

Knocking around Garza Bay all day long has necessitated some structural repairs on the floor, and the outer gunwale is being replaced with this PVC section fiber-glassed into the hull.

Stay tuned next month for updates as we get the fleet back in the water.
