Mike Gilbert’s group continued their amazing hot streak on the water with a fantastic Blue Marlin release on the Explorer.

This monster is certainly the fish-of-a-lifetime, and is the third Marlin release for the Explorer in as many days.

This consistency really speaks to Captain Carlos’ growth as a fisherman, and Mate Kevin’s fearlessness in the cockpit.

They rounded out the scorecard with a nice Sailfish release.

The Barroom Brawler scored a knockout with client Matt Smoker achieving the Billfish Grand Slam on July 28!

The day started innocently enough with a pair of nice Sailfish releases:

Then Captain Carlos improved upon the scorecard with a small Black Marlin release.

Estimated around 200lbs., this juvenile Black Marlin put up a big fight but was safely handled and released by Mate Kevin.

Then a 500+ lbs. Blue Marlin hit the hook and Matt Smoker belted up for the true fish-of-a-lifetime:

This fish is a true monster and is fitting that it was final jewel in the Grand Slam crown for Mr. Smoker.

Oh, one other thing about this Grand Slam…5hr. HALF DAY TRIP!

Most anglers work their whole lives to accomplish the Grand Slam, but the Explorer only needs 300 minutes…mic drop!

Jason Sandmaier and his son performed beautifully on the Adventurer on the 21st, so much so that two days later they brought the ladies along for a day with Captain Carlos on the Explorer.

The super panga delivered the goods with five Sailfish released throughout the trip.

Excellent fish-handling by Mate Kevin to see all these fish safely released.

Great work by this fun fishing family.

Mike Burling and his crew of legendary Fernandina Beach anglers have put a whopping on a lot of billfish in Nosara over the years, and they added to their legacy with a huge day of Sailfish releases on the Explorer.

They started the day with this sweet Double Sailfish release.

Great fish-handling by Mate Kevin to see to both safe releases.

The crew picked off Sailfish one at a time for the rest of the day, scoring four more releases.

Mark Perdue joined the barroom brawler for two full days of fishing and they scored big with Captain Carlos and Mate Kevin.

“The first day we went out, we had a double hookup with Carlos and Kevin in the Explorer in the first 20 minutes.”

“Then we found an old dilapidated net about 12 miles out and caught a couple of 80lb Dorado and as many smaller ones we could catch.”

“Plus many small yellowfin tuna. ย Caught fish around the net on almost every cast with spinning gear.”

Client Leonard Robinson of Utah joined the Explorer for his second time offshore on May 31 and scored a sweet Sailfish release. Safe released as always by Mate Kevin.

They also scored a handful of Yellowfin Tuna which yielded tasty dense filets.

Later on the beach they discovered a wayward handline rig; this staple of Costa Rican shore fishing is devestaingly simple and features a modern twist with a DOA Jighead.

“I had the experience of a lifetime thanks to the crew of the Explorer.” Leonard wrote in an email. “I will be a return customer!!! Pura Vida.”

The brother combo of Captain Carlos and Mate Kevin makes fishing on the Explorer a family affair, so what better place to bring the kids for an introduction to blue water fishing.

Decked out in her new FishingNosara hat, this little angler scored a big Sailfish with the super panga.

They released a few more Sails throughout this very memorable day on the water.

Client Tony King rolled into town and fished his very first afternoon on board the barroom brawler, and sure enough he picked a fight with the biggest mofo in the place!

What a great Marlin!

Clearly Captain Carlos and Mate Kevin are dialed-in and their amazing scorecards are proving the point.

Safe released so we can expect to fight this monster again really soon!
