Captain Eduardo has been knocking ’em out the last few weeks, and yesterday’s trip with Terry on the Sportsman was truly one to remember. They loaded up with a bunch of Bonitas for strip bait which in turn yielded three nice Yellowfin Tunas and two Amberjacks.
Then in the afternoon the Sailfish bite turned on in a major way. They raised five sails and buried the hooks into two of them. The releases were estimated at 80lbs. and 110lbs. Fantastic fishing by the legendary Captain Eduardo Carrillo.
A few weeks back while pre-fishing for the Ship of Fools Tournament, I asked Captain David Barrantes of the Explorer if there were any other area captains who he didn’t like. See in Florida we get really competitive with other boats, especially during tournament time.
David looked at me like I was crazy and laughed off the question. “Matt, we are all friends on the water.”
Sure enough, these guys really look out for each other. From sharing the location of good fishing spots to giving away excess bait, the Ticos of Garza bay are family first, fishermen second.
It is no surprise then that when longtime FishingNosara mate Vibert Blanche, Jr. received his own boat, the Secret Spot, that Captain David joined him for an afternoon trip to help shake down the new craft.
David and Vibert shared the duties of rigging, gaffing, and angling like old friends. I imagine that seeing these two titans of Garza fishing in the same boat scared the bejezzus out of the fish, and with good reason.
By the end of the trip they had caught several nice Yellowfin tunas and this beautiful Roosterfish.
Though the Secret Spot is not currently a part of the FishingNosara fleet, we wish young Vibert the best of luck on his new boat…after all “We are all friends on the water.”
Most recently, Ran Davis booked the Wanderer on April 8 and had some really nice catches. Mr. Davis and his group came home with a 40lbs. Cuberra Snapper, four Yellowfin Tunas, and a tasty little white tuna.
Great inshore action for the Wanderer in a month where the fish are literally chewing the bottoms out of the boats. Great job by the whole FishingNosara Team!
The Explorer was back on duty the morning of March 25 with client Luke and early half day. They got off to a quick start, catching a 20lbs. Dorado and a football-sized Yellowfin Tuna.
Around 11am the billfish woke up and began assaulting the Explorer‘s spread. In less than an hour they raised three Sailfish and released two. Excellent action no matter how you slice it!
For a victory lap, Luke and David visited the inshore reef for a quick casting session and once again put the hooks into an incredible fish… a 60lbs. Rooster Fish!
After the Ship of Fools, we knew there would be no post tournament letdown for the Explorer. Captain David on the barroom brawler called the Explorer caught a white tuna, a 25lbs. Yellowfin tuna, and a 45lbs. Dorado. Excellent trip!
March 20 was Matty and Jack’s turn on the Wanderer, and a special day for Captain Jack. He was the main man on the ย Wanderer Construction yet this day marked his first time back on the boat he built.
Satisfied with the boat’s health after a year in the water, we stayed inshore in the morning to load up on more Yellowfin than we knew what to do with.

At noon they were joined by Craig and William Kidd of North Carolina for some offshore trolling. Mr. Kidd reeled in this magnificant Dorado estimated to weigh 50 lbs. The strike came just before 5 pm…Long day, but well worth the wait.
Jack and Matty along with clients Jim and Bryan were out on the Explorer getting geared up for the Ship of Fools Tournament this weekend. With a scoring system that rewards big billfish and multiple inshore species in a weighted fashion, this local tourneo is THE bragging rights event of the season.
To prepare, we are tightening up our Cuberra Snapper tactics in a way that also permits for solid Yellowfin action. This way we can fill up the scorecard in multiple ways. Matty nailed this one late in the day on a 2.5 hour evening trip.
There were three trips booked on the Wanderer on March 17 and all of the clients caught fish and had a great time. First up this little dude turned out to be a Yellowfin Tuna’s worst nightmare:

Later in the afternoon the Yellowfin bite intensified and the catches kept getting bigger:
Finally in the evening, the big red monster came calling and the boys on the Wanderer knew how to handle the beast. This is clearly one of the bigger Cuberra Snappers of the season so far. What a great day from Captain William and First Mate Alex!
Captain Jack and Matty, the FishingNosara Building Dream Team, took some time off from dialing-in the new Safari Carts long enough to join Captain David for a quick 2 hr. evening trip. In this short time Jack ripped in a nice 40lbs. Cuberra Snapper.
With dinner in the box, Matty ordered the appetizer in the form of a football-sized Yellowfin tuna. They are heading out again tomorrow with more meals in mind. Nice trip to the fish market!
There was a great report on March 16 from the Wanderer of wonderful action on the inshore reefs. They brought in a nice Yellowfin Tuna, a Rainbow Runner, and the smallest Dorado imaginable (we threw that one back obviously).
The blue water is bubbling with action this weekend and our boats and Captains are ready to pull some fish out of the boil. Yesterday, client Chris Graves on the Wanderer hooked up a big sailfish but lost it after 40 seconds of jumping and tailwalking. He finished his day inshore and caught a pair of nice Yellowfin tunas.
This morning our great friend Katherine Chase is out on the Wanderer seeking Sails, Marlin and Tunas. Also, Robert Mederos is out on the Explorer already scouring the reefs for Roosterfish and Tunas. Should be a great day!
