Kingbuster 400 – June 10-12, 2011

FishingNosara and Nosara Paradise Rentals were pleased to sponsor the Kingbuster 400 Tournament in St. Augustine, FL. This was the first major King Mackeral tournament of the season and one with a long history of ‘setting the tone’ for the tournament season.

This year’s format was a single day Saturday shootout with the biggest fish taking home the prize. US Representative for FishingNosara Craig Sutton and the A-team (First Mate Carl Schmidt, Mate Andrew Herbenick, and Ms. Paula) on the Fishtastic caught a few decent Kingfish, but none worth writing home about.

Over 70 Junior Anglers participated on Friday with the winning Kingfish weighing in at an astounding 42lbs.; on Saturday the general tournament endured some rough seas and soft biting fish but still saw some 30lbs.-40lbs. King Mackerels in the box. Extra special thanks are due to Captain Don Dingman (Hook the Future) and Frank Joura for making this tournament a huge success. We can’t wait to do it again next year.

It was an especially exciting day for Mr. Tom Cavin of Jacksonville who won a week in Casa Capitan and a half-day fishing with Captain David on the Explorer. He is aiming to bring the whole family down for the week sometime in August or November, and we are stoked to roll out the red carpet for him.

Great end to a great weekend!

Captain David and the Explorer are on a hot streak this month and today welcome client Leo to the Super Panga for a trip to the honeyholes on the inshore reefs. On a quick 2.5 hour trip Leo Koski pulled in a GIGANTIC 50+lbs. Cubera Snapper. He was so excited that he signed up for a second day of fishing right there on the spot.

We look forward to seeing what Leo, Captain David, and the barroom brawler Explorer can pull up tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Aggressive Black Marlin

“Just one of many videos we took on our recent Costa Rica trip. This one is of a giant Marlin I caught shortly after Marcia and I released a nice double sailfish hookup! It is now thought by most that she is in fact a Black Marlin between 450-500lbs, at first thought to be a Blue Marlin. Worked her aggressively standing and got her boatside in less than hour.”

“We released this fish after after pulling her a good while, her color returned vividly, spectacular and will post that release video soon and some other great vids!”

“Listen closely to the mates first comment as he grabs the bill…….funny….enjoy!” -Tyson Wegman

Captain David and the Explorer are looking to keep the momentum rolling as May 2011 turned out to be one of our best months ever. Client Beau Bannerman and his children charted Captain David for a 2.5 hour sunset fishing trip yesterday and they had some great action. The fishbox was slapped full of five nice Yellowfin Tuna as the sun tucked away for the evening. Sushi time!

Make some room in the Hall of Fame for Tyson Wegman! After an excellent day with Captain David on the Explorer, Mr. Wegman and his squeeze took to the Wanderer with the sole intention of catching billfish…what happened is a day of big Marlin and multiple Sailfish releases by the big blue beauty.

They got on the water early and at around 8am the first bills came calling. First Mate Alex set the hook in the first Sailfish and handed off to Tyson when immediately the long outrigger popped out of the clip…another Sailfish was on the hook!

The combination ofย  top-notch tackle, consistent angling,ย  Captain William’s stellar boat handling brought home this amazing Double Sailfish Release.

This kind of catch is enough to earn Tyson enshrinement in the Hall of Fame, but the fish that came calling an hour later at 9:30am was truly the fish of a lifetime:

Estimated weight: 500+lbs. Released: You betcha. First Mate Alex: He may look exhausted, but you try wrangling a half-ton of billfish in less than an hour and we’ll see how you feel. This capped off two excellent days of fishing for Tyson Wegman and we can’t wait to see him back in Nosara soon…the billfish may not feel this way!

Let’s check out her pictures from this exact moment in time:

Fantastic work by Captain William, Alex, and the Wegman group! You sir, are now officially a legend.

A day that will live forever in the annals of FishingNosara history! First off, Master Captain Vibert on the Cabo welcomed back Ivan DeLuca, a longtime friend and repeat client for a day of offshore billfish hunting. They had some good early action on the troll, then nailed a sweet 150lbs. Striped Marlin.

Meanwhile over on the famous Wanderer client Jesse Feldman and his posse had a counter to Vibert’s great catch. How about a 300lbs. Blue Marlin release?

As icing on the cake they boated a pair of nice yella fellas for the table. It used to be said that the Marlin bite turns off after Easter…Great work by the Wanderer and the Cabo to prove that the Marlin bite down here does in fact stay on well into September.

Tyson Wegman joined Captain David on the Explorer for a quick 2.5hr trip on May 29 and packed every minute of it with action. Accompanied by the lovely Marcia, Mr. Wegman made a special trip to Nosara specifically to go fishing with the best pros in the country.

Captain David cemented his reputation by putting Mr. Wegman on six Yellowfin Tunas, two Blue Runners and a big Cubera Snapper who barely got away. They had a great time and filled up the Explorer‘s fishbox with enough Yellowfin sushi to certainly last the rest of their trip. Great work Tyson and Captain David.

May 26, 2011

So one day I was sitting around with Captain David as a gully-washing monsoon poured down on Guiones Beach and asked him, “What do you do when it rains?” His response was pure Tico: “Fish in the rain.”

Today reminded me of that statement because as the rain poured down from the mountains, Captain David and the Explorer welcomed client Daniel Altari for a three hour fishing trip. Despite high seas, gusty winds and torrential rains they still had some action on the inshore reefs. With one Yellowfin Tuna in the box, they called it a day before they really got soaked.

Tough day of fishing, put productive nonetheless.
