Another incredible Marlin release for the Wanderer! Client Steve Terny and his group were on the big blue billfish bruiser yesterday evening and caught the true fish of a lifetime. This Black Marlin release was the result of an intense but economical fight; only 35 minutes from hook-up to release.
As usual Captain William and First Mate Alex coordinated the operation with fluid efficiency and Mr. Terny was up to the ultimate angler’s challenge.
What a great catch, and as always a safe release. Great work by Steve Terny and the crew of the Wanderer!
On June 18 Charlie Pharr and his friends booked the Wanderer for a half day and started the morning off right. Nothing feels better than putting TWO 60lbs. Yellowfin Tuna in the box before noon! Then they raised two Sailfish but could not convince them to eat.
By the end of the trip they had two 60+ lbs. Yellas and also a couple of 20lbs. From football-sized to football-player-sized, the Yellowfin Tuna bite was ON FIRE this month!
The Yellowfin Tuna have been all over the recent fishing reports, however the Explorer always seems to have another trick up her sleeve. Captain David stumbled upon a hot spot of the elusive Rainbow Runners this morning and with newlywed clients Jennie and Johnny on the reels, they piled the fishbox to the brim with 10 of these tasty morsels.
The Rainbow Runner (also called Rainbow Tunney) boasts delicious white meat and is a very challenging fish to hook and a strong fighter. It has been quite a while since a boat managed to wear out this many Rainbows. For an idea of how strong the Rainbow Runner can be, check out this picture:
Notice that while Jennie has the rod doubled over, Captain David has a firm hold of the fighting belt in one hand and a white-knuckle grip on the 3 inch. Stainless Steel superstructure of the Explorer. Without this chain of strength, something would have been swimming away (either the client or the fish).
Great job Captain David and congrats to the bride and groom. May the ‘Pura Vida’ spirit stay with you for all of your years together!
Great day for client Scott Howell on the Explorer with lots of variety and tons of meat in the box. The day started off strong with three Rainbow Runners, a feisty little 6lbs. Red Snapper, and a 10lbs. Yellowtail Snapper. They were just about to call it a day when a school of Yella Fellas wandered under the anchor and started popping off lines.
Scott and Captain David boated 10 nice Yellowfin Tuna during this late-day feeding frenzy, turning what was a great day into a legendary day for the Explorer. Mr. Howell has another trip booked for tomorrow and we can only hope that the good catches keep coming.
Captain David is the go-to-guy for sunset fishing trips; these late-afternoon 3 hour trips are a great way to introduce kids and novice anglers to the joy of Costa Rica sport fishing without committing to the expense and exertion of a full day on the water. Client Marc brought his daughter along for a sunset cruise yesterday evening and checked in with this nice Yellowfin Tuna.
The Explorer has seen many first-time anglers cut their teeth, and Captain David’s steady boat handling and genuine good nature have made it a fishing experience to last a lifetime for these young anglers. The look on the little lady’s face says it all!
Captain David welcome client Daniel to the Explorer today and they did some serious work on the Yellowfin Tuna. With Garza Bay and the green mountains looming in the backround of Pinca Padre, David parked the the 26′ Super Panga in her usual spot on the reef. The classic Bonita chunk/knocker rig was the weapon of choice, and as always the Yella Fellas couldn’t resist it.
Another great trip from Captain David and the Explorer.
Captain David and the Explorer are on a hot streak this month and today welcome client Leo to the Super Panga for a trip to the honeyholes on the inshore reefs. On a quick 2.5 hour trip Leo Koski pulled in a GIGANTIC 50+lbs. Cubera Snapper. He was so excited that he signed up for a second day of fishing right there on the spot.
We look forward to seeing what Leo, Captain David, and the barroom brawler Explorer can pull up tomorrow. Stay tuned!
Captain Eduardo has been staying very busy on the Nice n’ Tight this month and he had a great short trip today. Clients Ken Richardson, his niece and Gabriela from Century 21 booked the 23′ boat for a 3 hour trip and caught a nice Yellowfin tuna and four tough little Bonitas. Great rod-bending action from Captain Eduardo.
Captain David and the Explorer are looking to keep the momentum rolling as May 2011 turned out to be one of our best months ever. Client Beau Bannerman and his children charted Captain David for a 2.5 hour sunset fishing trip yesterday and they had some great action. The fishbox was slapped full of five nice Yellowfin Tuna as the sun tucked away for the evening. Sushi time!
Make some room in the Hall of Fame for Tyson Wegman! After an excellent day with Captain David on the Explorer, Mr. Wegman and his squeeze took to the Wanderer with the sole intention of catching billfish…what happened is a day of big Marlin and multiple Sailfish releases by the big blue beauty.
They got on the water early and at around 8am the first bills came calling. First Mate Alex set the hook in the first Sailfish and handed off to Tyson when immediately the long outrigger popped out of the clip…another Sailfish was on the hook!
The combination ofย top-notch tackle, consistent angling,ย Captain William’s stellar boat handling brought home this amazing Double Sailfish Release.
This kind of catch is enough to earn Tyson enshrinement in the Hall of Fame, but the fish that came calling an hour later at 9:30am was truly the fish of a lifetime:
Estimated weight: 500+lbs. Released: You betcha. First Mate Alex: He may look exhausted, but you try wrangling a half-ton of billfish in less than an hour and we’ll see how you feel. This capped off two excellent days of fishing for Tyson Wegman and we can’t wait to see him back in Nosara soon…the billfish may not feel this way!
Let’s check out her pictures from this exact moment in time:
Fantastic work by Captain William, Alex, and the Wegman group! You sir, are now officially a legend.
